A 21-year-old man was arrested and charged with reckless driving causing the death of a 76-year-old woman on Sunday, October 25.

Acting Deputy Commissioner Tevita Vailea said today, the accused was driving a car heading to Nuku'alofa, with two other passengers at 4:00pm.

It is alleged that he was speeding on Hala Tahi at Talafo'ou, when he lost control, swerved and crashed into a car that was heading from the opposite direction.

This car was driven by a man from Holonga with the victim, as his passenger.

The woman sustained serious injuries and passed away at the Vaiola Hospital last night. 

Meanwhile, two other passengers, with the accused, sustained serious injuries and remain in the hospital.

The accused is remanded in police custody as investigation continues. 

This is the sixth road fatality this year.
