Fresh local produce on display at ‘Atele Indoor Stadium marked World Food Day today, 16 October under the theme ‘Grow, nourish, sustain. Together. Our actions are our future’.
Healthy meals and beverages made from local ingredients were also exhibited.
An official event organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, Forests and Fisheries (MAFFF) was held with Prime Minister Hon Dr Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa as guest of honour.
The World Food Day message from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), was delivered by Hon Lord Tu’ilakepa.
This day marks the birth of FAO on 16 October 1945 as a reminder of the importance of agriculture and food.
According to the FAO, more than 2 billion people do not have regular access to enough safe, nutritious food. The COVID-19 pandemic has added to this challenge, threatening to reverse important gains in food security, nutrition, and livelihoods.
Lord Tu'ilakepa said the current pandemic is starting to affect our food systems, which will lead to more poverty for mankind.
"This is an important time to plan to recover because of CoViD-19, initiate programs to help the poor, ensure safety of food, among others."
World Food Day is celebrated by all member countries of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Today also marks the 75th Anniversary of the founding of FAO.
