“Give hope and save lives” is the message of this month's Breast Cancer Awareness Month launched on October 1, by the Tonga Breast Cancer society Inc., with their Patron Princess Pilolevu Tuita as guest of honour.

The Minister of Health Hon. Dr ‘Amelia Tu'ipulotu. in a keynote address. encouraged women to come forward and get tested, because early detection of breast cancer leads to saving lives.

She said breast cancer is a health dilemma worldwide and in developed countries like Australia and New Zealand there are more opportunities for women to get information, get tested and receive better treatment.

But in developing countries like Tonga we are limited in accessing such advancements and women often come in late seeking medical assistance, while others resort to Tongan medicine, which does not reap good health results.

“We are happy that we have a Mammography Unit at Vaiola Hospital and we encourage women to come and make use of it, the test is quick. It is even more essential that those with family history get tested,” she said.

According to hospital records, about three women are affected by breast cancer in Tonga every month. It can also happen to men so we need men to support us, she said.

The hospital has a specialist radiologist Dr 'Ana ‘Akau'ola at the Mammography Unit.

Some of the hurdles that prevent women from coming in is the fear of the illness and fear of its treatment.

"The best treatment is early detection and treatment so it is vital that women seek urgent medical assistance. We need to work together to raise awareness and encourage  give them hope and save lives."

The Minister also promoted growing wellness for life and offered advice in terms of daily fitness and exercise at home and at work.

Guests at the morning tea event were welcomed by the President of Tonga Breast Cancer Society Hon. Fatafehi Tuita.

A breast cancer survivor, Hatasou Heimuli Taulanga, spoke about her experiences. Meleane Tamale of the Silapelua Singing Academy performed a special item.
