Tonga Rugby Union fights while 'Ikale Tahi squad unknown [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Tonga has yet to announce its squad for the national rugby team, 'Ikale Tahi for the coming Rugby World Cup in September, while a rift in the TRU board may end up in court.

Since the 'Ikale Tahi qualified to participate in the Rugby World Cup after thrashing South Korea 85-3 at the Waitemata Park, Auckland, New Zealand on February 10 there has been no announcement about the 'Ikale Tahi squad and its management team, which must prepare for the World Cup in France in September.

Most countries have announced their squads, which are already in training.

The CEO of the Tonga Rugby Union, Saia Fonua said yesterday February 28, that they were still working on a plan and a preparation schedule for the 'Ikale Tahi squad.

While the CEO is still plotting on the drawing board, three Union Board members, Ricky Mafi, Filo 'Akau'ola and Feleti Fa'otusia are calling for the resignation of the four other Board members.

They claimed that the CEO Saia Fonua, along with the Chairman Sangstar Saulala, the Deputy Chairman Peseti Ma'afu, and two members from the business sector Tu'i Uata and Talikava Palu had held their own separate meetings and made decisions without a proper board meeting and approval. They also charged that the four had ignored the submissions for their resignation.

"We have requested for a proper board meeting but they have ignored our plea and refused to step down because they have broken the TRU Constitution, and the fact that they have included political agendas in the TRU like calling on local rugby players to join the meetings at Pangai Si'i last November breaches the constitution.

"So we are currently seeking legal advice in order to file for a court proceeding against these members as soon as possible," said the member.

Meanwhile, the rugby-mad Tongan public are waiting to find out who is in the squad, and who is the coach and the rest of the management team.

Tonga will meet the other teams in Pool A, which are the champion, England, and South Africa, Samoa and the American Eagles.
