No further decisions have been made in regard to admitting a new International Rugby League (IRL) member for Tonga, confirmed Asia Pacific Rugby League Head of Operations, Gareth Holmes today.
"We are waiting the outcome of the [Court of Arbitration for Sport] CAS hearing before any further steps are taken."
Two organizations have applied for full membership to become Tonga’s recognized national rugby league governing body. This was after the former body, Tonga National Rugby League (TNRL) was expelled from the IRL membership in February after a dispute with Mate Ma'a Tonga players, when Coach Kristian Woolf was let go.
The TNRL appealed to CAS and a hearing is set for September 22.
One of the organizations that has applied for IRL membership is the Tonga Ma'a Tonga Rugby League (TMTRL).
Lord Fakafanua is the President of the TMTRL Board, with Semisi Sika as Chair and players Sika Manu and Will Hopoate as nominated board members.
The second organization was not named.
