$1.8M data network upgrade improves download speed [1]

Digicel telecommunications technicians upgrade sites around Tonga to the LTE network.

A $1.8 million data network upgrade to provide faster internet download speed in Tonga has been completed by Digicel, using what is termed LTE or “Long Term Evolution”, which is a marketing phrase to signify progression toward true 4G.

LTE is faster than 3G.

Digicel Tonga CEO, Anthony Seuseu said all sites across Tongatapu, Ha’apai, Vava’u and ‘Eua are now 100% LTE. “We want our customers to live their best digital lives and this upgrade will improve speed and coverage in the Kingdom."

The upgrade was completed over 12 months in two phases. One of the benefits of the network upgrade is allowing for additional data capacity using the latest LTE technology.

Anthony said it is a major milestone for Tonga to celebrate and be proud of.

“We are the first and only operator to upgrade all our towers 100% LTE in Tonga.”

Since the upgrade, Anthony said they have seen their customers use 77% more data than they did in June 2019.
