The Matariki Art Trail exhibition featuring work by Tongan and New Zealand artists, including Visesio Siasau and Serene Tay, was launched by New Zealand High Commissioner HE Tiffany Babington last night at the Waterfront Restaurant and Lodge, Ma’ufanga.
Other creative artists Tanya Edwards and Sesefo 'Otutaha contributed to the theme of Matariki, showcasing the unique connections and shared identity between Aotearoa-New Zealand and Tonga.
Matariki is the Maori name for the cluster of stars also known as the Pleiades. It rises during mid-winter and marks the start of the Maori New Year. It is a major event in New Zealand with celebrations and activities held across the country.
New Zealand High Commissioner HE Tiffany Babington said Polynesians have known the constellation by various claims and the Tongans sometimes refer to it as Mataliki.
“Traditionally in Aotearoa, New Zealand, Matariki remembers our ancestors, celebrates new life, the planting of new crops, and the sharing of gifts provided by the land and the sea.”
“This art trail promotes awareness of Matariki in Tonga as a shared Polynesian tradition, an important thread drawing us together.”
The event is part of ongoing celebrations of 50 years of diplomatic relations between New Zealand and Tonga.
The art trail will run until August 14 and includes an art exhibition at JJ Rose Gallery, at Langafonua from July 15, and an artist talk and presentation on Thursday July 23 at Friends Café from 5pm – 7pm.
