World Red Cross Day celebrations in Tonga on 8 May at the Ofa Tui Amanaki Centre Hall saw the launch of a website used to restore communications within families in times of emergencies, including natural disasters, conflicts or migration.
A ready-to-use familylinks.org [2] website can be launched within a few hours following emergencies or crisis situations.
The website will be used in Tonga if there’s large scale disaster, re-connecting our people here and abroad, said Tonga Red Cross Secretary General, Sione Taumoefolau.
People suffer terribly when they lose contact with their loved ones and don’t know where they are or whether they are safe, he said.
The World Red Cross Day event held at at the Ofa Tui Amanaki Centre Hall, was attended by the Australian High Commissioner HE Adrian Morrison, New Zealand High Commissioner HE Tiffany Babington, as well as NEMO Director Mafua Maka, and Tonga Red Cross Board members Aloma Johanson and Drew Havea.
The event included brief updates on recent Tropical Cyclone Harold response and the ongoing CoViD-19 response. A variety of stalls were set up displaying items such as CoViD-19 materials and relief items that were handed out after the cyclone.
