Tonga finished seventh in the final round of the World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series in Uruguay on 22-23 February, booking a place in the World Series qualifying tournament in Hong Kong later this year.
Tonga topped their pool when they beat Chile 19-12, Colombia 40-19 and Portugal 14-7 on Day One but fell short on Day Two losing to Italy 15-26 and Uruguay 7-27.
Last weekend, Tonga placed fifth in the opening round of the Challenger Series in Chile and the overall final standing sees Tonga place sixth.
Cemeting a place in the top eight across the two tournaments means Tonga will go up against Japan, Hong Kong, Germany, Chile, Uruguay, Uganda and Zimbabwe in the qualifier in Hong Kong in October.
The Challenger Series [2] is a new sevens competition that was launched this month to boost rugby sevens’ development across the world.
