New Zealand Rugby 7s star Sione Molia was honoured by his home suburb of Ōtara in Auckland, being named Sportsman of the Year at the 2019 Ōtara Sports Awards. He was awarded a 'Supreme Award' for his contributions to New Zealand's National 7s team that finished third at the World Rugby Men’s Sevens Series 2018/19. New Zealand won the Dubai and Sydney legs of the World Series.

 

The 29-year-old debuted for New Zealand's 7s team in  2016 and has since become standout a player in the team. He scored 22 tries alone in the 2018/19 series.

 

“I’m truly blessed and honoured to be receiving the supreme award", said Molia in a media statement.

 

"When I got the news, I got a bit teary and was speechless, but I was very happy at the same time,” 

“I want to say thank you to my family and friends as well as my partner for all the work that they’ve done to help me, without their support I wouldn’t be where I am today.”
