New Zealand Police today closed their investigation into a death threat allegedly made against Prime Minister Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa on a Facebook post last week, after finding that the person involved was “remorseful and meant no harm”.
The Facebook post was not revealed by New Zealand Police although it was considered serious enough to warrant an investigation.
The investigation was prompted last week after the Chair of the Tonga Advisory Council in Auckland, Melino Maka filed a complaint to New Zealand Police. Maka said he took action after being approached by members of the Tongan diaspora who were upset by comments made by fellow Tongans in New Zealand who were unhappy with Prime Minister Tu’i’onetoa.
Tonga’s Police Commissioner Stephen Caldwell issued a statement last week saying that the investigation in New Zealand was being taken seriously by Police in Tonga.
“We remind the public: if you see something, report it directly to the Police. I give a clear warning that arrests will follow bad behaviour”, stated Caldwell.
The Facebook page of the alleged offender was deactivated during the investigation.
