Tonga qualifies for Final 7s Olympic Qualification Tournament [1]

Olympic hopes are alive for Tonga’s national Men’s 7s team after they defeated Papua New Guinea 31 – 0 to win 5th place at the Oceania Sevens Championship in Suva, Fiji over the weekend. More importantly, the 5th place position means that they qualify for the Final Olympic Qualification Tournament to take place next year on 20-21 June, at a location yet to be confirmed.
Tonga’s Women’s 7s team lost all of their pool games, although they did manage to defeat Nauru 19 – 12 to win 11th place in a wooden spoon decider.
Australia won both the men’s and women’s competition at the Oceania Sevens Championship. In the men’s finals, Australia defeated hosts Fiji 22 – 7 while Japan took bronze after beating Samoa 26 – 21. In the women’s finals, Australia defeated Fiji 24 – 12 while New Zealand took bronze after beating Papua New Guinea 29 – 0.
The 2020 Men's Rugby Sevens Final Olympic Qualification Tournament will be extremely competitive with only the final winner being granted entry to the 2020 Olympics. Samoa, France and Ireland are competing in the tournament with high public expectations on the line.
The 12 teams to compete at the 2020 Men's Rugby Sevens Final Olympic Qualification Tournament will be fully confirmed on 24 November.
