Tonga’s Men’s Rugby 7s team have started well on the opening day of the Oceania 7s Championships, achieving two big wins over Vanuatu (34 – 10) and American Samoa (29 – 5) in Suva, Fiji yesterday 7 November.

The team will play Australia and Nauru today, and must win both games in order to top their pool and qualify for the knockout stages of the tournament. Only the first placed team in Tonga’s pool will qualify for the knockout stages. The first place pool team also automatically qualifies for next year’s Tokyo Olympic games.

Coached by former ‘Ikale Tahi winger Tevita Tuifua, the team features some high-profile players such as current ‘Ikale Tahi backs Atieli Pakalani and Fotu Lokotui, both of whom only recently performed at the 2019 Rugby World Cup. Also on the team is former New Zealand 7s representative Sam Vaka and Niukula Osika who last year played for Auckland in New Zealand 7s tournament. Their captain is Ha’apai bred Tana Fotofili.
