The ‘Ikale Tahi finished their Rugby World Cup campaign on a positive note with a 31 – 19 victory over the United States at Hanazono Rugby Stadium, Osaka, Japan on Sunday. In a scrappy contest, the ‘Ikale Tahi came close to scoring numerous tries that were botched by tackles and over-thrown passes.
Despite dominating territory and possession in the first half, the ‘Ikale Tahi were behind 12 – 7 at the break. In the second half, the ‘Ikale Tahi finally got their act together, scoring three tries and converting a penalty.
Siefried Fisi’hoi scored the first try of the game in the 16th minute to give Tonga an early lead. Malietoa Hingano regained the lead for Tonga 17 – 12 after scoring from a length of the field counter-attack. Captain Siale Piutau scored Tonga’s third try a few minute later.
In overtime, the ‘Ikale Tahi were awarded a penalty near the US try line. Instead of converting the penalty, the team opted for a scrum and a chip kick from Latiume Fosita led to a try from Inu Veainu.
Siale Piutau was given the honor of converting the final try, a fitting tribute as he announced that the game would be his final test match for Tonga. The game also happened to coincide with his 34th birthday.
The game is also the last for flanker Sione Kalamafoni. Both Kalamafoni and Piutau boast over 30 appearances for Tonga and have participated in three World Cups.
