Six contestants in the 2018 Miss Pacific Islands looked radiant on November 30 as they paraded on colourful floats through central Nuku’alofa.
Led by the Tonga Police Brass Band, the contestants who began their pageant competition on November 29, waved to people who happened to be in the Central Business District and on the waterfront. The parade was held today because most contestants will be leaving on Saturday flights.
Some locals and youths also joined the float parade on this beautiful sunny day event.
The new Miss Pacific Islands will be crowned tonight at the ‘Atele Indoor Stadium.
The Miss Pacific Islands Pageant was formerly known as the Miss South Pacific Pageant, established by the government of Samoa in 1987. In 2014 the Pageant was renamed in order to represent the Pacific Region instead of just the South Pacific.
Miss South Pacific has been won by Tonga twice, first by Ma'ata Mo'ungaloa in 1995, and again by Tesi Toluta’u in 2007. Tonga has hosted the pageant on three previous years, in 1995, 1999 and 2005.
The reigning 2017 Miss Pacific Islands is Matauaina Gwendolyn To‘omalata of American Samoa.
