Tonga’s MET Service Director, ‘Ofa Fa’anunu is the first Tongan to become President of the World Meteorological Organization Regional Association (WMO RA5).
He was elected during the 17th Session of WMO Regional Association V (South-West Pacific) Meeting held last week in Nuku’alofa.
Minister for MEIDECC responsible for Meteorology, Hon. Poasi Tei said this was quite an achievement for Tonga.
Fa’anunu was the only nominee, although the chair gave the meeting an opportunity to nominate more candidates.
As new president, he will serve for four-years, succeeding Andi Eka Sakya, Director General of the Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics.
Meanwhile, Tauala Katea Tuvalu’s Met Director was elected vice-president for this region.
