Japan donates $1.8m aid to Health [1]

Ambulances, vehicles and medical equipment worth $1.8m pa’anga was handed over to Tonga’s Ministry of Health by the Japanese Government on Wednesday, 15 August.
They included three new ambulances, two Toyota Hiace vans, and medical equipment, including a high pressure steam sterilizer, portable dental unit, mounth guard machine, nubulizer, cross matching centrifuge, and ICE Ventilator, and other equipment.
Japan’s Ambassador to Tonga, HE Mr Tetsuya Ishii, in handing over the equipment to Minister for Health, Hon Saia Piukala, and Ministry of Health CEO, Dr Siale ‘Akau’ola, said the assistance is part of Japan’s efforts to combat non-communicable diseases in accordance with the PALM8 Leaders’ declaration.
“Our sincere wish is to contribute to the national efforts to save life in particular as many lives as possible, by utilizing various assistances schemes effectively and properly.”
He emphasized the importance of “arranging regular maintenance for these vehicles and equipment in order to keep them in good conditions as long as possible, and driving safely.”
Hon. Saia Piukala acknowledged Japan’s previous donation to health in 2016 and was grateful for their consistent assistance in empowering the Ministry of Health deliver good services and be able to reach out to communities.
“The Ministry will utilize the equipment to make a difference in the lives of our patients and best care for our patients,” he said.
The donation was made under Japan’s Non-Project Grant Aid, which promotes economic and social development in Tonga.
