A male pedestrian from Patangata died on Friday night, August 3 after being hit by a vehicle whose driver was allegedly under the influence of alcohol on Vuna Road in Popua.

Police said today the 38-year-old accused from Popua was arested and charged with reckless driving causing death and drunk driving.

The accident occurred at around 7:00pm as the accused was driving east when he allegedly hit the victim, who was walking on the side of the road in front of the New Zealand High Commissioner's residence.

The victim, whose name has not been released, was confirmed dead upon arrival at Vaiola Hospital.

The accused remains in custody.

This is the 19^th road fatality recorded so far this year.
