HM Queen Nanasipau'u awarded prizes in a competition for Tongan handicraft producers, held by the Langafonua 'a Fafine Tonga on June 21.

More than 40 artisans, mostly women from throughout Tongatapu, competed in six categories in the making of tablemats and coasters, baskets, flower arrangements and other craft items.

Langafonua Secretary-General Laite Tu’ivailala said this is the second year of the competition, with cash prizes funded by the Government of the People’s Republic of China.

She said the annual competition encourages handicraft producers to lift the quality of what they make and sell for the market.

Queen  Nanasipau'u, as President of Langafonua, awarded prizes to winners in each category, with the first prize $500, second prize $300 and third prize $200.

The event was held at the Digicel square in the Nuku'alofa CBD, next to Langafonua centre, where the handicrafts were displayed and judged in the morning, before the award ceremony in the afternoon.
