The ‘Ikale Tahi were defeated by Georgia 16 – 15 in the opening round of the Pacific Nations Cup in Suva, Fiji on Saturday 9 June. Georgia's swarming defense frustrated the ‘Ikale Tahi throughout the match, and regularly forced Tonga's backline into lateral movements.
Georgia scored the first try in the 7th minute when their fullback Soso Matiashvili scooped up the ball spilled from a ruck near his try line and ran a length of the field try. Entering the final ten minutes, Georgia led 16 - 3.
In the 71st minute, the ‘Ikale Tahi finally scored a try in the form of debut prop David Lolohea. Star halfback Sona Takulua failed to convert the try, meaning Tonga would have to score twice to gain a lead. Winger David Halaifonua scored the ‘Ikale Tahi’s second try in the 79th minute.
Fiji-Samoa
Fiji defeated Samoa 24 - 22 in their opening match on the same day.
