A Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination training was held in Neiafu this month bringing different agencies and resources that coordinates search and rescue incidents in the seas off Vava'u.

Participants included lead agency Tonga Police, the Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand  (RCCNZ), Marine and Ports, Tonga Customs and VERA (Vava'u, Emergency Response Association).

Acting Deputy Commissioner ‘Atunaisa Taumoepeau said this training is important for Tonga Police so they know who is available to assist them in any way during search and rescue incidents at sea.

He said marine search and rescues include public education and awareness to stop people making bad decisions with bad boats and equipment. It is also important to maintain the capability to respond quickly and professionally in a coordinated manner and bringing home lost seafarers while also making sure that the rescuers get home to families by making good operational decisions.

David Wilson and Christie Wilson from RCCNZ carried out the training from May 14-16, after visiting Tonga in 2016 to identify and scope out training to enhance SAR response and boating safety.

Tongatapu had its first Search and Rescue Coordination training in September last year, aimed at enhancing understanding and coordination between the agencies involved in maritime search and rescue in Tonga.

Since the launch of Police Rescue Boats donated by New Zealand and Australian Governments (Tonga Police Development Program), in December 2015 and supported by HMAF Navy, 100 lives have been saved from 37 Marine SAR Operations.

This training was funded by the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
