The global Red Cross movement has many stories to tell in its important work across a wide spectrum of community activities, and not only in responding to emergencies. Tonga Red Cross are involved in many areas including working with people with disabilities, climate change awareness, health initiatives, and community development.

Visiting Nuku'alofa today, Hanna Butler from the International Federations of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies Pacific office in Suva, said it is important for the media and public to learn more about what Tonga Red Cross and to raise awareness. 

At a Media Workshop she said some people may think that the only work the Red Cross does relates to providing assistance before and after emergencies or providing first aid but it is much broader than that. Tonga Red Cross are involved in many other areas.

Tonga Red Cross Communications Officer Polikalepo Kefu said the workshop also provided a platform to strengthen their communication with journalists.

"We aim not only to create more understanding and awareness about what we do but to also improve our working relationship with media because they are the most influential in getting our stories out to the public."

Hosted by the Tonga Red Cross Society, International Federations of Red Cross and Red Crescent and the International Committee of Red Cross, the workshop was held for half a day at Tungi Colonnade.
