New solar power generation for the people of Pangaimotu and ‘Otea Islands in Vava’u was commissioned on April 19.
Japanese Ambassador HE Tetsuya Ishii commissioned the solar under a Vava’u/Ha’apai Rural and Remote Communities Solar Electrification Project.
This project had received USD$4 million grant aid from the Government of Japan through the Pacific Environmental Community (PEC) Fund to support development efforts to promote renewable energy by Japan made technology.
Implemented by MEIDECC in collaboration with the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS), the project is to install 22 solar powered water pumps for 17 villages on ‘Uta Vava’u and 36 solar powered deep freezers in 20 sites, on remote islands in both Vava'u and Ha'apai.
The Ambassador also opened a new Waste Authority Ltd office at Kameli and handed over three donated vehicles reconditioned under its GGP program.
