Tonga cyclone warnings cancelled [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Wednesday, April 11, 2018 - 18:04.  Updated on Wednesday, April 11, 2018 - 21:41.

The Fua'amotu Tropical Cyclone Centre has deactivated its Watch for Tropical Cyclone Keni as the storm has moved out of Tonga's boundary this afternoon.

Meteorological Operations returned to normal routines from 4pm today when TC Keni Cat. 2, located 565km south of Nuku'alofa, was moving southeast at 25KT.

Tonga Met stated that Keni will continue to move further away from Tonga to the Southeast in the next 24 hours and is not expected to cause any further threat to Tonga.

All tropical advisories on Keni have been cancelled.

Damage

A situation report from the National Emergency Management Office (NEMO) today urged immediate action to repair damage at Niu'eiki Hospital.

TC Keni inflicted major damage to the hospital's roof and damaged seven residential houses, six in Angaha and one in Pangai on 'Eua island. The electricity was down following the morning thunderstorm.

The assessment team reported no damage to major infrastructure and houses in Tongatapu. Storm damage was mainly fallen branches, while three fallen electrical poles at the Sopu area caused a power outage in the area.

There were also power outages reported in Nautoka and Niutoua.

The power at Hihifo, Vaotu'u and 'Utulau was switched off for a period during the height of the storm.

There were no reports of damage from Ha'apai so far, but not all areas were contacted.
