More aid is being distributed to those affected by Tropical Cyclone Gita, not only by the major aid agencies, but other businesses, such as SPBD Microfinance Tonga, are joining in the relief effort.
Hundreds of women, members of the microfinance company, lined up at centres on ‘Eua and in 25 villages on Tongatapu’s eastern side to receive their relief kits last week.
Over 750 relief kits have been handed out with more distributed this week. The kits include items such as rice, flour, crackers, water, candles, hygiene items, and a small monetary gift, among other things.
SPBD General Manager, Amy Lofgren said the monetary gift is an extra component that people need.
“We feel the cash component is a much-needed element as relief kits cannot supply all items that families need such as baby formula, diapers or needed medicines.”
After the cyclone struck Tongatapu and 'Eua on the evening of 12 February, the company suspended loan repayments to ease the burden on those who were most impacted. The most affected will have their loans restructured and SPBD is also offering rehabilitation loans to members who want to rebuild their homes and businesses.
Since its establishment over nine years ago in Tonga, SPBD continues to provide opportunities for women entrepreneurs to start, grow, and maintain their small businesses where they can save and invest in their homes and children's education.
