Nightclubs and bars shut down for a week [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Friday, February 16, 2018 - 18:08.  Updated on Friday, February 16, 2018 - 18:20.

All nightclubs  and bars in Tongatapu will be shut down today, February 16 for a week to ensure the safety of people, under powers given to Police in Tonga's current State of Emergency.

Police Commissioner Stephen Caldwell has temporarily shut down all licensed premises to the public.

This in order to maintain the safety of the people and assist in the recovery process after the devastation left by Tropical Cyclone Gita, he stated this evening.

Bars and nightclubs will close down from 8:00pm to 8:00am, effective until February 22.

The Commissioner is expected to review this decision in a week’s time whether it will continue or not.

Meanwhile, resorts and hotels serving alcohol have been been advised to cater to their guests only.
