China pledges aid for cyclone relief in Tonga [1]

The Chinese government and Embassy in Tonga has pledged over USD$600,000 for cyclone relief in Tonga.
The Chinese Ambassador to Tonga, HE Wang Baodong met the Prime Minister Hon ‘Akilisi Pohiva yesterday, 15 February, to confirm China’s contribution for recovery from Cyclone Gita, which struck Tonga on 12 February.
China’s contribution will come from three different sources:
- Chinese Government - USD$500,000 cyclone relief funds
- Chinese Red Cross Society - USD$100,000 donation to the Tonga Red Cross Society.
- Chinese Embassy donation - TOP$40,000.
Yesterday's meeting was the first time that the Prime Minister has played an active role as Prime Minister since 18 January when he attended the swearing-in of Cabinet Minister in the Legislative Assembly.
