Waste management vehicles gifted for outer islands [1]

Three of five waste management trucks to be used in Vava'u and Ha'apai were handed over on December 7, to the Waste Authority Ltd from the Government of Japan in Nuku'alofa.
Four trucks will be for Vava'u, including two collection waste vehicles, one dump truck, and one septic truck, while one waste collection truck will go to Ha’apai.
Japan’s Ambassador HE Mr Tetsuya Ishii said the trucks are key components for establishing a reliable waste management service in Vava’u and Ha’apai, and a step towards preserving the beauty of both island groups.
“I hope that the collaborative efforts that led to the strengthening of waste management for the outer islands will influence, a positive and environmentally friendly behavior in the people of Tonga to sustain your beautiful island's natural surroundings."
Donated by Kochi-City, Shimotsuma city and Hanno Seisou Center, the trucks were reconditioned with USD$107,491 under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).
Dr Nailasikau Halatuituia, Deputy Chairman at the Common Utility Boards in thanking Japan said effective waste management has been a challenge for Waste Authority but with these much needed trucks it will improve capacity to deliver their service.
The other two trucks are are waiting on mechanical fittings before they are shipped to the outer islands soon.
