Candidates campaigning wraps up. 14 November 2017.

With the General Election tomorrow Thursday, November 16 candidates have wound-up their campaigns after weeks of running rowdy floats parade, alongside radio, television programmes and community meetings throughout Tonga.

Candidates are are prohibited from campaigning in any form 24-hours prior to the start of the polling and during the hours of the polling, whether it be loudspeaker, public address, film, video, television or radio. They are also to remove their material such as billboards from all locations on or before polling day, required by the Electoral Act.

A total of 59,003 voters have registered, including the supplementary role, with 86 candidates contesting the People’s Representatives 17 seats in parliament. Polling will start at 9:00am through to 4:00pm, tomorrow Thursday November 16.

The nobles’ election for their nine representatives will be held between 10:00am and noon on the same day.

Results are expected to be announced on the same night, with unofficial results announced throughout the evening.

Tongans head to the polls a year early, after King Tupou VI dissolved parliament on August 24, issuing a Writ of Election on September 5, three years into the four-year term of government of Prime Minister 'Akilisi Pohiva.
