The national Tonga Men’s 7s team have failed to qualify for the 2018 Commonwealth Games and the 2018 Hong Kong Sevens tournament, after they finished in 7th place at the 2017 Oceania Rugby Sevens Championship over the weekend November 10 – 11.

Fiji won the championship after beating New Zealand 26 – 0. The Cook Islands successfully qualified to the Hong Kong Sevens after beating Tonga 12 – 5 in a 6th place decider.

The 2017 Oceania Sevens Championship is a qualifying tournament for the 2018 Hong Kong Sevens tournament, the 2018 Commonwealth Games and the 2018 Rugby Sevens World Cup.

Tonga still has a chance to qualify for the 2018 Rugby Sevens World Cup if they can beat the Cook Islands at the 2017 Mini-Pacific Games in Vanuatu next month 4-15 December.

In the women’s competition, the Tonga Women’s 7s team failed to get a win after being outclassed by all of their opponents. The heaviest loss came against hosts Fiji (52 – 5) and Australia (59 – 0). New Zealand won the tournament after beating Australia in the final.
