Playing for their families, people and the little island of Tonga is the pride and passion that motivates the Mate Ma’a Tonga players to give their all in their 2017 Rugby League World Cup campaign, later this month.

Speaking to local media on October 12, four of the players expressed how proud they are to wear the red jersey.

North Queensland Cowboys star Jason Taumalolo said it is extremely humbling.

“I think the biggest is how proud and passionate we are as Tongans because we love our people, we love our country but first of all we love God."

He said it is great to be in Tonga and see where it all started for his parents, knowing where his roots are and what is like to be part of the Mate Ma'a Tonga team.

"For myself to represent my family means a lot and to get the opportunity to do that in this World Cup, I hope to make my family proud and everyone who is a proud Tongan.”

When asked whether he was worried that his decision to play for Tonga might affect his chance to play for New Zealand in the future, the 24-year-old said he was not too worried because obviously a lot has been said in the media about New Zealand.

“That is not my decision if I am welcomed back to New Zealand but for now I am worried about playing for Tonga and doing my best to represent our little nation.”

Gold Coast Titans giant Konrad Hurrell who was born and raised in Tongatapu said it is always a privilege and humbling experience for him to come back to his family and roots.

“It is a big motivation for me when I am playing for my family and for my little island.”

He said when he is on the field he knows his family and island has got his back.

Putting on the red jersey brings back to me a lot memories when I was playing rugby with bare feet, sandals with plastic bottles when growing up, he said.

At the same time, Sika Manu who plays for Hull F.C in the UK and was part of the Tongan team in the 2013 World Cup said it is always important to be back in Tonga and connect with the people.

“It reminds me why I play for Tonga. It's great for us and I am proud to have worn the red jersey for a few times now."

Meanwhile, it was the first time in Tonga for Canterbury Bulldog's fullback Will Hopoate, who was equally happy.

"It is great to be here and see where it all began for my parents and grandparents and the blood that is running through me. For people here, we bring them hope and happiness. We represent Tongans whether they are here or in Australia and New Zealand. It's a wonderful responsibility that I do not take lightly and something I am thankful for."
