Tonga qualifies for 2019 Rugby World Cup [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Monday, July 17, 2017 - 23:06.  Updated on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 - 18:08.

The ‘Ikale Tahi have successfully qualified for the 2019 World Rugby Cup in Japan after coming second place in the Pacific Nations Cup, which ended on Saturday after Fiji defeated Samoa 38 -16 in Apia.

The ‘Ikale Tahi will play in Pool C of the World Cup against England, France, Argentina and USA.

Samoa have missed qualifying for the “Pool of death” by coming last in the Pacific Nations Cup. Failing to get automatic qualification, they will have to play against two upcoming European teams (favoured to be Portugal and Russia) in-order to qualify for Pool B of the World Cup against New Zealand, South Africa and Italy.

Having come first in the Pacific Nations Cup, Fiji will play in the less challenging Pool D of the World Cup where they will face Australia, Wales, Georgia and a yet-to-be-confirmed team from the Americas (most likely Canada or Uruguay).
