FlyNiu Airlines will close down this week following a Supreme Court ruling this morning.
The FlyNiu CEO 'Atu Finau this afternoon in a Press Conference said that they had accepted the court decision with much regret. He said that the biggest loser is the travelling public who will no longer have the right to choose which airline they want to fly with.
'Atu said they will offer five flights between today and Friday evening to clear the bookings that they have made. They may even provide extra flights for passengers who were booked for Saturday but who may want to bring their flights forward to Friday.
With regards to compensation to staff, 'Atu said that the aircraft with Air National pilots will return to New Zealand next week. They will refund FlyNiu ticket holders who had booked seats until September 15, "and whatever little money that is left will be shared among our 32 staff."
The local shareholders for FlyNiu Airlines Ltd. are 'Atu Finau, Sam Folaumoetu'i and Venisi Taufa, all former Royal Tongan Airlines staff.
'Atu said that they have filed a claim for damages which will be heard at the Nuku'alofa Supreme Court either in mid-November or later in the year.
