Healthy living, better education and how to advance our economy are the challenges that we are facing today, Tonga's King Tupou VI said when he opened the 2017-18 Session of the Tonga Legislative Assembly in Nuku'alofa this morning, 1 June 2017.

The King, however, was certain that Tongans are capable of confronting these challenges.

King Tupou VI advised people to eat local food, because they know very well what they are eating. He said they know how the food was cultivated and fertilized, and it is better for them. He urged government to assist the private sector in fisheries and agriculture. He stress that more action is needed to insert into the development of tourism, instead of just talking about it.

At the village level, King Tupou VI was sure that the community could contribute to advance healthy living and the education of their children. "We can help ourselves, eat well, and be wise."

MPs responsibilties

He called on people and the nobles to stay in touch with their representatives to parliament between elections, and reminded the members of parliament of their responsibilities.

The King called on government to develop the economy, be vigilant with government expenditure but to address the needs of the people in relation to health, education and the state of our economy.

During his speech at the opening of parliament King Tupou VI commented on the beauty of the new St George Government Building, constructed by the People’s Republic of China; he also extended his gratitude to other foreign countries, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, the European Union and other international organisations which assisted with the development of Tonga.
