The Pacific Games Council is still waiting for the Tongan Government to confirm the cancellation of their hosting of the 2019 Pacific Games as stated by Prime Minister ‘Akilisi Pohiva during a radio interview in New Zealand two days ago.
The Council’s CEO, Laurent Cassier, told Matangi Tonga this evening that “as far as we are concerned the projects are still ongoing”.
The Council’s President, Vidya Lakhan, told Fijian media outlets today and yesterday that the Tongan government needed to confirm the cancellation.
Lakhan told the Fiji Sun, “Right now it’s only a rumour or an act of mischief”.
“We’ve contacted our people in Tonga and they are surprised at the report since their Prime Minister is away overseas.”
The Tonga Cabinet has also not announced the cancellation.
