Queen Salote College wins first prize in the chanting competition.

Loudly chanting to "Stop Bullying and Violence!" earned Queen Salote College $1000 pa’anga as the winners of a chanting competition held at the finals of the 2017 Inter-Collegiate Sports Competition lon Friday, 28 April at Teufaiva Stadium.

Tonga College won $700 pa’anga in second place and ‘Api Fo’ou College won $500 in third place.

The chanting competition, organized by the Women and Children Crisis Centre (WCCC), was themed ‘Stop Bullying and Violence at School and Anywhere Else Chanting Campaign’.

WCCC Director, ‘Ofa Guttenbeil Likiliki said that the chanting campaign was designed as a education pilot, as part of a prevention strategy to stop all forms of bullying and violent behaviour at school and anywhere else.

“The inter-collegiate sports is a wonderful opportunity to create a meaningful impact by working with thousands of students over a tight timeframe with one clear message about non-violence.”

“We use the chanting campaign strategy with primary school students and it works well so we decided to test it out with the secondary school level in the hope that we can continue this every year,” she said.

In addition to winning the chant, Queen Salote College won $200 pa’anga for best composition, and student, Malia Losa won best costume ($200 pa’anga) and best cheerleader.

The winning chants will be used regularly during the WCCC Fanguna Radio Program.

The ‘Stop Bullying and Violence at School and Anywhere Else Chanting Campaign’ was funded by UN Women Pacific Regional Ending Violence Against Women Facility Fund.

In 2015, a similar themed chant competition “Ending Violence Against Women and Children” funded by International Women’s Day was won by Tonga College.
