A four-day Vaini Day celebration this week started on Thursday, April 20 bringing together Vaini people from throughout Tonga and abroad.

‘Inoke Teisi the town officer said they have various activities planned out which today included a luncheon, traditional dancing and fundraising attended by the Prime Minister Hon 'Akilisi Pohiva, the estate holder Lord Ma'afu and his family.

Various groups also performed colourful traditional performances and made donations to the village to mark the day.

It is understood that the money collected will be used to finance various village developments to upgrade their roads and rugby field.

Other events during the weekend will include a sports day and float parade.

Vaini Village has a population of 3,294 according to the 2016 Population Census released earlier this year. Vaini District has the third largest population on Tongatapu of 13,006.
