HM King Tupou VI was expected to return from Niuatoputapu  in the far north of Tonga this afternoon Monday, February 20 following the death of the Queen Mother Halaevalu Mata’aho (90) in Auckland.

The King left Tongatapu last week, and boarded the patrol boat VOEA Savea in Neiafu, Vava’u to sail to Niuatoputapu. HMAF confirmed that the King arrived at Niuatoputapu on Saturday, February 18.

Locals at Niuatoputapu told Matangi Tonga that the King was expected to depart the island on the VOEA Savea this afternoon.

In the meantime, no official announcement has been made as to the arrangement of the Queen Mother's funeral, and the full details of her passing have not been released.
