Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Friday, February 17, 2017 - 18:11.  Updated on Saturday, April 8, 2017 - 14:01.

Operation Safe Streets, which continues in Tongatapu, saw 18 people arrested and charged with drinking in public places, disorderly behaviour and drunk driving by Tonga Police last weekend February 10-12.

The operation which is held every weekend aims to reduce alcohol fuelled crimes. The Operation last weekend arrested 15 people in Nuku’alofa, one at Mu’a and two at the Nukunuku district.

This is an increase from 12 people that were arrested in the previous weekend of February 3-5, over similar offences.

The police patrol the roads and the community while responding to any complaint of any disturbance due to drunken behaviour.

Over this period there have been no reports of any injuries from any brawl in the CBD, said a police spokesperson.
