Josh Tonga a 10-year-old New Zealand rookie boxer, won his first official fight in the Australian National Golden Gloves in Brisbane, Queensland last month.
The young boxer had been confined to sparring for the last couple of years as the age for an official fight is 10-years-old.
His coach, Jamie Roberts told Stuff news that he was thrilled as Josh took out his Australian opponent, who had two fights under his belt, to win the under 40kg novice class. Josh won on points.
"I think he hit the kid two to one, easy. He had a very good fight," said Jamie.
"He's a kid with a massive future. We've seen many come through the gym but very few with Josh's gift or ability. He can hit hard but doesn't concentrate on his power, but on his technique.”
"You don't see many 9-year-olds like him last year, going on training runs after school three days a week. It's all part of his conditioning and training."
Josh won a gold medal and miniature golden gloves on a green and gold ribbon.
Jamie sees Josh as a role model.
"He is courteous to everyone. He's just so respectful and a pleasure to take away."
Not only is Josh a talent in the boxing ring, he has multiple athletic abilities playing rugby for Christchurch Rugby Club and winning his school’s age-grade cross-country for the last three years.
He also won the primary school zones this year to qualify for the Canterbury inter-schools cross-country championship.
