Human Rights in Tonga [1]

Kolofo'ou, Tonga

Thursday, March 23, 2006 - 11:30.  Updated on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 - 10:30.

Dear Editor,

'Olive Ramanlal has good reasons to be alarmed by the presence of the Secretary of the Human Rights and Democracy Movement in Tonga, Mr. 'Akilisi Pohiva with two cameramen, outside her gate. In the late 1990's and in 2000, particularly during the seizure of the Chaudhury Government in Fiji, Mr. Pohiva pointed to the unrest there and talked up the threat posed by Asian immigrants here. As the Chinese community endured armed robberies and damage to their properties, Mr. Pohiva watched with glee. I can recount the many other instances Mr. Pohiva has openly and unashamedly flouted human rights in this country over issues such as religious liberty, gender equality and of course racism.

Mr. Pohiva is a populist politician and a clear and genuine threat to Mrs. Ramanlal and her family's security. I too am unhappy with my electricity bill but I am pleased that the Secretary of the People'’s Democratic Party is taking Shoreline to court. Mr. Pohiva, for some mysterious reason did not do that.
