A successful Tongan Language Week concluded in New Zealand on 10 September with many events held throughout the country.

The opening in Wellington on 4 September was a Po Lotu involving 15 churches singing Tongan songs of praise.

Guest speaker Dr Lu’isa Fonua Faeamani, Clinical Director at The Fono (health and social services) in Auckland, emphasized the importance of speaking the Tongan language and how to conduct oneself as a Tongan, as well as the importance of educating the children. She shared her experiences as a student, and shared a message to always trust in God which gave her the perseverance to complete her medical studies at the University of Otago. She is thankful she grew up in the Tongan culture.

On 8 September, an event was held in the New Zealand National Library to commemorate the Tongan language with various speeches by Tongan community leaders talking about the establishment of the Tongan Constitution in 1826, Tongan culture, Tongans knowledge in regards to their duty in the family, church and country as well as the actions of King George Tupou I where he dedicated Tonga to God.

The event concluded with a display of Tongan books by missionaries to Tonga since 1826, including the first Tongan bible that was first published in the 17^th century.
