Forty-three police officers received their Diplomas in General Policing, the first of this qualification to be awarded by the Tonga Police College on Tuesday, 16 August in Nuku'alofa.

The Minister of Police Hon Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa presented certificates to 26 men and 17 women graduates, during the graduation attended by proud families at the Tonga Police Headquarters in Longolongo.

The two-year program, recognized by the Tongan National Qualification Framework, included foundation learning, leadership, policing practice, law discipline, lifesaving skills and extensive fitness training.

Commissioner of Police Stephen Caldwell said the training provided by the College and in the workplace is of the highest standard.

He told graduates they had been taught what their expectations are of their performances as police officers.

“These are things such as respect for others, compassion, honesty, courage, attention to duty and adherence to law, policy and procedure.”

"The foundation of good policing is having a good relationship with the people we serve based on trust and respect. Our Tonga Police mission is to earn the trust and confidence of the people of Tonga through our service to the community," said the Commissioner.
