A newborn baby girl was found alive, after being abandoned in a bush area wrapped in a plastic bag, near By-Pass Road at Halaleva in Nuku'alofa this morning, Friday 22 July.

Chief Superintendent Tevita Fifita said today two nuns found the newborn at around 8:00am on a side road near the Church of Tonga chapel on By-Pass Road.

He said doctors confirmed that the baby was born this morning.

The nuns had reported to police they spotted the newborn lying in the bush area beside the road wrapped in a plastic bag and alive.

Fifita said the baby is being kept in an incubator and is doing well at Vaiola Hospital.

"Police have begun investigation to find out who abandoned the baby and we are taking statements from people living in the area," he said.

Temperatures dropped to about 18-19C in the early morning.
