Four candidates for Vava’u 16 By-Election [1]

Four candidates, including one woman, have registered to contest the seat of Vava’u 16 in the Tonga Legislative Assembly in a By-Election to be held on 14 July.

The Electoral Commission in Nuku’alofa confirmed the candidates registered and drew their number in the ballot paper on Monday, 20 June at the Governor’s Office in Neiafu.

Candidates

  1. ‘Akosita Lavulavu
  2. Viliami Uasike Latu
  3. ‘Atalasa Pouvalu
  4. ‘Ipeni Siale

The by-election was called for by the Speaker of the House Lord Tu’ivakano to replace ‘Etuate Lavulavu who lost his Vava'u 16 seat after the Supreme Court found him guilty of bribery and overspending during his election campaign, in 2014. One of the candidates who is contesting in this by-election is his wife ‘Akosita Lavulavu.

Only one of the candidates has previously been a member of parliament. Viliami Uasike Latu lost his seat in the 2014 election. 'Ipeni Siale contented the same seat in 2014 and came third.

In 2014 ‘Atalasa Pouvalu was unsuccessful in running for the Tongatapu 7 constituency.
