A first ever-Pacific Triangular Rugby Championship for Tonga, Samoa and Fiji will kick start on April 15, and run to May 20, confirmed Sakopo Lolohea CEO of the Tonga Rugby Union today.
Sakopo who returned from a meeting with the Pacific Island Advisory Committee in Apia, Samoa, earlier this month said the Pacific Triangular Championship is between two teams each selected from Tonga, Samoa, Fiji. He said the championship format would be on a round robin basis and the two top teams would play in the finals.
Sakopo said one of the Tongan teams would play away to Samoa and the other team would host the other Samoan team at the opening of the championship in Tonga on April 15. The other Fijian teams would play each other in the opening game in Fiji.
Sakopo added the squad for Tonga...s two local teams would be selected after the Aoniu Datec Rugby Cup to be held in February 2006 where they would select a 60-member squad, 30 players in each team as well as the rugby jersey color. But they have already selected Feleti Tu...ihalamaka and Sione Fetuani as the two coaches of the two teams with John Sullivan and Takitoa Taumoepeau as the managers.
The Pacific Triangular Rugby Championships is being organised by the Pacific Islands Advisory Committee in which Tonga, Samoa and Fiji are members.
Sponsorship and trophies have yet to be confirmed.
