No reply from King as deadline set by Tongan reformers passes [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Friday, January 20, 2006 - 16:31.  Updated on Monday, May 12, 2014 - 23:56.

Political reformers who demanded response from the King of Tonga to a petition proposing amendments to the Tongan Constitution, say their January 16 deadline has passed without any word from the king.

Their proposals and deadline were presented to the Palace Office by executives of the National Reform Committee on December 8 2005.

'Akilisi Pohiva, the President of the Reform committee confirmed today that there had not been any response from the king. He said that their deadline for a response from the king was Monday, and they were currently holding consultation talks with church leaders to present their case.

'Akilisi also said that there were certain actions they would take but at this stage they would not reveal it to the public because they were currently holding talks and making plans for what they will do next.

It has been over a month since the formal handing over of the booklet containing the reform proposals, made by Dr 'Aivi Puloka on behalf of the National Committee for Political Reform, to the Assistant Private Secretary of the King, Sateki 'Ahio, at the Palace Office on December 8.
