7.1 undersea earthquake shakes Tonga and Fiji [1]

A MAJOR undersea earthquake occurred close to Tonga and Fiji, at at 11:13:40 am Tonga time (10:13:40 am Fiji time) this morning January 3. The quake shook buildings in central Nuku'alofa for a few seconds, but so far no damage has been reported, and none was immediately obvious.

The magnitude 7.1 event was estimated to be at a depth of 579 km (360 miles) according to the US Geological Survey World Data Center for Seismology, in Denver, USA.

The exact location of the centre was 19.878...°S, 178.233...°W, which is 100 km (60 miles) NNE of Ndoi Island, Fiji, 345 km (215 miles) WNW of Nuku'alofa, Tonga, 400 km (250 miles) ESE of Suva, Viti Levu, Fiji, 1995 km (1240 miles) NNE of Auckland, New Zealand.
