The Australian Under-19 girls soccer team became the undisputed champion of Oceania after defeating New Zealand 6-0 at Tonga’s Teufaiva Stadium in Nuku‘alofa on Friday May 3.
Both the Australians and New Zealanders had not lost a game during the 2002 Oceania Football Confederation Under 19 Qualifying Tournament, when they met at the final, but the Australians proved to be too good for the Kiwis.
Outstanding among the Australian girls was their No. 10, Caitlin Munoz, who scored their first two points. Caitlin also scored their first point in the second half. The other three points for Australia were scored by No. 4, Emma Davidson, with two points, and No. 16, Hayley Crawford.
Tonga and Samoa fought it out for the third and fourth places, but the host overcame the Samoans who went down 2-0.
Tonga’s No. 11, Salote Moimoi, scored Tonga’s first point, and No. 4, Haitelenisia Kaufusi, scored Tonga’s second point.
The winner of the tournament, Australia will go on and represent Oceania in the Under-19 World Cup to be held in Canada in August.
Countries represented at the tournament were the Cook Islands, Fiji, American Samoa, Samoa, Tonga, New Zealand and Australia.
