Tourism awards encourage development of industry [1]

Tonga Tourism Recognition and Appreciation Awards were handed out today, Thursday 21 January, to recognise businesses and individuals who have made outstanding contributions towards the development of the tourism sector in Tonga.

The certificates were issued by the Minister of Tourism, Hon. ‘Etuate Lavulavu, and the Chairman of the Tonga Tourism Authority, Tomifa Paea.

Recipients included operators of island and beach resorts, accommodation providers, telecommunications providers, an airline operator, and those engaged in the handicrafts, tours, culture, heritage, food, entertainment and other tourism related ventures.

Certificates were also given to consulates for foreign aid and assistance to tourism including Japan, China, New Zealand and Australia, as well as former and current members of the Tonga Tourism Association. Special mention was also extended to the civil service including the Prime Minister, former and current CEOs.

The Minister for Inland Revenue and Customs Hon Tevita Lavemaau awarded the certificates at the Tourism Authority compound on Hala Vuna.
